Hippity Hoppity Bunny Bum Cake

You know when something is really really special? When something is so dear to you you can't really explain it in words? When something stuns you beyond words and makes you feel elated beyond expectation? That's what the Hippity Hoppity Bunny Bum Cake is for me.

There's actually a story behind this cake's design. I designed, baked, and decorated this adorable thing for my darling baby niece Gubby when she turned nine months old. We were celebrating every month until she turned an year old. Gubby is very precious for me. She's the first baby in my life, the first little one to the youngest me, and the first cutie pie to make me an auntie. She's my little bunny and thus the bunny bum cake! We'd gotten bunny ears for Gubby to wear and when she did, I swear, she really did look like a furry white bunny. That's what inspired me to make this cake.

I wanted to make the cake super colorful and bright so I went with green insides to go with the flowery feel of what I had planned for the cake's design. The sponge was a green funfetti one (not to forget extra delicious!). I also tinted my buttercream leaf green to crumb coat my cake (that's the rough coat of buttercream used on the cake so the cake crumbs don't show). The colors I decided for this cake were bright yellow, pink, and leaf green. My goal was to achieve maximum adorable factor! It had to be something Gubby would reach out at and grab for!

My bunny was going to be digging into a flowery garden. I piped beautiful roses on the sides and embellished them with candy pearls in various cute colors. It looked beautiful!

For the top I had decided to create the effect as if my bunny had dug into the middle of the garden. For that I piped grass using buttercream tinted green. I love piping grass on stuff, it's one of those super cool piping techniques that gets me all excited!

The bunny was my biggest challenge for this cake. It was my first time shaping an animal (butt) out of fondant and I wanted it to look really cute and as perfect as possible. When I was done and I took a final look at it I was so happy with myself, and with my bunny bum. It looked so cute! I'd even made wrinkles under the feet by imprinting roughly on the fondant and the tail was textured to look furry and adorable. I swear, this was so so so cute I wished I could actually pat a bunny bum for real! *laughs*

And then came the fun part of finishing off the cake. I added 'dirt' on the grass top - which was basically a delicious crushed mess of Oreos. Then came the bunny bum on top digging into the dirt. I sprinkled some dirt on the bunny's feet too just to make it as real as possible.
Notice something else though, something much more important and awesome. I put cheerios on the cake! That's what the bunny was digging in for! Nope, I'm not crazy and random, there was actually a reason behind it. Back then Gubby really liked eating Cheerios. She'd eat them just like that and she'd always want us to give her the Cheerios in her own hands. She'd scatter them on her baby chair's table and be totally adorable. So I added Cheerios as a personalized touch. The bunny was inspired by Gubby so it was digging for Cheerios. Cuteeeeeeeee!

It looked very real! I also loved how adorable it all looked together.

The dirt made from Oreos looked very real and even more so beside the grass. It really looked like Cheerios were scattered around the garden.

I loved the furry tail!!!

And of course the roses looked beautiful!

Then came the best part when Gubby was to 'cut' her cake. We made her wear a headband of bunny ears too which was such an adorable touch. What happened then was just what I had wished for. Gubby smiled when she saw the bunny and then reached out and picked up the Cheerios off the cake. In the picture above she has picked up a Cheerio and is feeding it to her daddy! (Please excuse my emotional overload here as I remember and blink away happy tears!)

When the cake was finally cut into it looked just as pretty and garden like from inside as it did from the outside. The green insides with a bright yellow filling that was loaded with green and red colored M&Ms looked so delicious. I couldn't wait to get my face into that cake!

And when we tasted it ... mouthwatering, tasty, fabulous.
Now that's what I am talking about. A cake that looked beautiful on the outside, tasted delicious on the inside, and had a personalized deep story behind its design!
MASTERPIECE!

  5. Such a great looking cake and lots of work on it! I love how you would celebrate your niece's months' birthdays. We did the same for my first (and now that I think of it only nephew; otherwise I have nieces) for his first year of life. Every month we did celebrate it. My sister and me were into cake decorating at the time (nothing as elaborate as yours) and we would usually make some themed cake for him too :)
