The Knitting Cake

Okay, cut the drama, let me just get to the point.
I LOVE THIS CAKE!
I love it so so so so so much, I can't even find words to explain it.
It is one of THOSE cakes of mine. You know?
One of THOSE cakes that I loved making and then loved looking at even more.
One of THOSE cakes that remain super special to me.

My mama is a fabulous knitter, she can knit up beautiful creations like magic in a jiffy. She'd given up the hobby when we were growing up but when my niece was born she got into her grandma mode and revived the love of knitting. We had no idea what she could do and when she began knitting wonders for our tiny darling Gubby we were STUNNED. When it was mama's first birthday as a grandmother I decided the cake needed to be equally stunning and that's when I ended up with this masterpiece. I put in my everything into this cake. I put in maximum creativity, maximum skill, maximum hard work, maximum effort, and most important of all ... maximum love. Those were the ingredients of The Knitting Cake.

Everything on this cake was a new challenge for me and I'd taken it up with full trust that I will be able to do it. Though I'll admit, when I finished with this cake I too was shocked at what beauty I had put together with my own hands. Did I do that? Me? Whaaaaaaaaat?

I tried making everything knitting-related possible that I could. The top of the cake had a ribbon that looked like a scrap piece of quilt, a ball of yarn, and a needle cushion.

Making the ball of yarn took some time because each thread was separately made out of fondant and placed by hand on top of and around a cupcake covered in fondant. My favorite was the adorable needle cushion though. I made it and then looked at it and wanted to keep it with me forever!

At the base of the cake I went super random. I wanted it to look like mama had knit something and there were scraps and bits everywhere now. Post knitting, you know? That kind of thing. So that's what I kept in mind when I designed the base of the cake. I'd made buttons in different shapes, colors, and sizes that I scattered here and there. Then I also made a knitted piece that I placed at the base of the cake. Another quilted ribbon was there too. Finally, I used my fondant shaping tools to substitute for mama's knitting needles. It was genius sub and looked super real!

The buttons looked absolutely real and so cute!

I covered the entire cake with buttons. All shapes, kinds, sizes, colors ...

Somewhere on the cake mama had to be written. I added a black frame so that it would pop out against the rest of those bright and happy colors and added the alphabets 'Maa' on it! It looked super cute and stood out!

The entire cake was covered in buttons and then I added heart shaped sprinkles to add more cuteness to it. It was a beautiful cake that looked real and adorable!

I'd colored the filling green to add more color to the cake. Mama had asked for pineapples so the filling had juicy chunks of pineapples in it. I also soaked some pineapple juice into the vanilla sponge so that she'd get a good dose of pineapples when she tasted the cake.

Mmm mmmmmmmmm ...

I know to those who're a regular on my blog this will sound familiar in a cliche-overused-kinda way but this cake (like many others) was my absolute masterpiece. I may not be able to knit (yet ... can't say never since I haven't tried) but I sure can bake up a knitting cake that looks adorable and just as real as the awesome creations mama knits up!

Ah, *sighs* ... the perfection of this cake takes my breath away!
